Jim Konstanty pitched 19 seasons from 1937 to 1957, three in college, 11 in the Major Leagues and nine in the minors, losing a year to the Military and another year to finishing college. He served in the U.S. Navy for one year during World War II (BN). After earning a Bachelor of Science Degree at Syracuse University, he pitched for the Cincinnati Reds, Boston Bees, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals. He established MLB records for games pitched (74) and games finished (62) in a season in 1950. Both records have since been broken.
Konstanty was the athletic director at Hartwick College from 1967 to 1972. He owned and operated a sporting goods store in Oneonta, NY from 1948 until retiring in 1973. He died at age 59 from stomach cancer after a brief illness at Fox Hospital in Oneonta NY and is buried at Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester, NY.
