Jim Halpin, born in England, was the youngest player in the National League when he made his debut at age 18 in 1882.
Two years later, he played more games at shortstop than any other player on the 1884 Washington Nationals of the Union Association.
In 1885 he finished out his major league career with the 1885 Detroit Wolverines. He was 21, the same age as teammate Deacon McGuire.
He died at age 29.
