Jim Gilligan has been a college coach, record-setting minor league manager and minor league coach and player.
He spent one year in the Detroit Tigers chain after college, going 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA in two games (one start) for the 1968 Batavia Trojans. He was 2 for 2 at the plate with a double.
Gilligan returned to Lamar as an assistant coach in 1970-1971. He then became head coach at Western New Mexico University in 1972. Gilligan then returned to his alma mater as head coach for the first of two stints, from 1973 to 1986.
Gilligan then went into pro ball. He was the pitching coach for the Salt Lake City Trappers in 1986, and managed the club in 1987. The club had a record 29-game winning streak, and Gilligan's jersey is part of a Hall of Fame exhibit honoring the streak. Over the next 4 years, he was the pitching coach of the Miami Miracle and the Taiwan national team, and worked for the Chinese Professional Baseball League, supplying foreign players.
Gilligan then returned to Lamar, where he has been head coach since 1992.
