[edit] Biographical Information
Jim Field played most of his major league career in the American Association from 1883 to 1885, but also played 52 games in 1890 (a year of three leagues) and a final 5 games in the National League in 1898 at the age of 35.
He was primarily a first baseman but pitched a couple of games in 1890. Although he had a lifetime .230 batting average, his Adjusted OPS was higher than average in three of his five seasons. He was the brother of Sam Field.
The book Major League Baseball Players of 1884 has an entry on him. He hit as high as .344 with Erie, and was considered a fine-fielding first baseman when he was team captain at Buffalo. After baseball, he ran a liquor store and a tavern.
An article in The Sporting News about Albany in 1892 referred to him as "Jim Fields".
