Jim Brennan was born Gottlieb Doering in St. Louis, MO, but was known during his playing career as Jim or Jack Brennan. He was listed in the 1900 Census as "John Doering, baseball umpire" and in the 1910 Census as "John Brennan", living both times at the same address in St. Louis.
Brennan played seven different positions in four different major leagues in the five years he played in the big leagues.
In later years he was a minor league umpire. In 1891 it was reported that he also had a job wherein "he makes books in pool room".
