Jerry Tabb was the Team USA first baseman in the 1971 Pan American Games, when they won Silver. He hit a solo home run in a 4-3 loss to Gold Medalist Cuba. Drafted in the first round in 1973 by the Chicago Cubs, he was up with the Cubs in the majors in 1976 and with the Oakland Athletics in 1977-78.
Tabb was at the University of Tulsa in 1970-73, and his time there overlapped with that of Steve Rogers, Mardie Cornejo, Steve Bowling and Mike Sember. Tabb was named the most outstanding player of the 1971 College World Series, where he, Bowling and Rogers were named to the All-Tournament team.
Tabb showed power in the minors, hitting 12 home runs in 76 games for Midland in 1973, and then banging out 31 homers for two teams in 1974. He spent parts of 1974-76 with Wichita, and in 1977 hit .344 for San Jose. In 1978 he hit .357 with 18 home runs in 97 games for Vancouver.
The Athletics bought him before the 1977 season and gave him his most major league at-bats that year. He hit 6 home runs in 144 at-bats that season during his time in the majors.
