Jermaine Van Buren was a second round pick in the 1998 amateur draft, and was a starter in the minors from 1998 to 2003. In 2004-2006 he became a successful reliever in the minors, getting 22 saves in 2004, 25 in 2005, and 16 in 2006, with low ERA's each year. His win-loss record in the minors from 1998-2006 was 46-36.

In December 2005, the Boston Red Sox acquired Jermaine Van Buren from the Chicago Cubs for outfielder Matt Ciaramella. He started spring training in 2007 with the Washington Nationals but was sent to the Columbus Clippers and has yet to return to the major leagues.
