The son of former big leaguer Jim Pyburn, outfielder Jeff Pyburn was selected by the San Diego Padres in the first round of the 1980 amateur draft but never reached the majors due to a knee injury. Pyburn was also a quarterback at the University of Georgia and was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the 5th round of the 1980 NFL draft.
