Jeff Flaig begins 2007 with the High Desert Mavericks.
Flaig starred in the 2001 World Youth Championship, hitting .536 with 3 HR and 12 RBI to lead team USA to the Gold Medal. He tied Lastings Milledge for the team lead in home runs and led in average and RBI. He made the All-Tournament team at shortstop. In the quarterfinals, with the USA trailing Japan 1-0 in the 7th, he hit a 2-run homer. He then relieved in the ninth and struck out two of three batters for the save. He made the All-Tournament team at SS.
He hit .591/?/.977 as a high school senior in 2003 and made the Baseball America high scool All-American second team alongside the likes of John Danks, Chad Billingsley and Ian Kennedy. The Seattle Mariners drafted him in the second round of the 2003 amateur draft and signed him for a $710,000 bonus. He signed late and did not play professionally that year.
In 2004, Flaig batted .252/.347/.318 for the AZL Mariners, playing mostly DH. The next year, he hit .254/.331/.424 for the Everett AquaSox. He led Northwest League first basemen with 57 double plays. His 19 doubles tied for fifth in the NWL.
Flaig struggled in his first full season of professional baseball, at age 21. He hit .220/.269/.307 in 91 games for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, with 73 strikeouts to 13 walks in 336 AB. He split time between third base (fielding .879), first base (fielding .984) and the outfield (fielding 1.000).
Jeff has begun 2007 with a .172/.214/.269 batting line in 25 games for the High Desert Mavericks.
