Jeff Ballard set career records at Stanford University in wins, strikeouts and innings pitched. Entering the 2009 season he still held the records for wins and innings, but had been passed by six pitchers in strikeouts, including Jack McDowell. He helped the USA win a Silver Medal in the 1983 Intercontinental Cup. In the 1984 Amateur World Series, he helped the US win Bronze by allowing no runs and two hits in 5 1/3 IP. He was signed as a 4th round pick in the 1985 amateur draft by the Baltimore Orioles and scout George Lauzerique.

Ballard was 18-8 for the Orioles in 1989, the peak of his major league career.
