Jay Bergmann was drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 11th round of the 2002 amateur draft. He was signed by scout Larry Izzo and made his pro debut that summer.

In 2008, Bergmann set an all-time record for the most at bats, 40, in a season by a player with an OBP of .000. The previous record was set by catcher Hal Finney, who went 0 for 35 for the 1936 Pirates.
