Javier Garcia pitched several years in the minors and has represented Venezuela in international competition.
Garcia debuted as a pro in 2001 with the La Pradera team of the Venezuelan Summer League, going 1-7 with a 3.08 ERA. He only walked eight in 53 innings. In 2002, he pitched for the DSL Dodgers West, with a 1-5, 4.29 record. Javier was up with the GCL Dodgers by 2003, where he was 4-5 with a 2.34 ERA in his US debut, walking 8 in 62 innings. Garcia ran into trouble in 2004 with the Ogden Raptors, going 2-3 with a 9.20 ERA and allowing a .320 average. Let go by the Los Angeles Dodgers chain, Garcia was out of Organized Baseball for the next three years.
Garcia pitched for Venezuela in the 2007 Baseball World Cup, with a 1.29 ERA in two relief outings, one of the club's top hurlers, far better than former big leaguer Beiker Graterol. That earned him a renewed look in the US; he split 2008 between the A ball Greenville Drive (3-1, 2 Sv, 5.06 in 25 G; 45 K in 42 2/3 IP) and independent Sioux Falls Canaries (1-0, 2 H, 11 K, 0 R in 6 2/3 IP).
