Jason Tyner was a key performer from the leadoff spot for Team USA in the 1997 Intercontinental Cup, hitting .439/.500/.512 with 9 runs and 8 RBI in 9 games. He was 2 for 5 with a double, walk, steal and 2 runs in their Bronze Medal game loss to the Australian national team. Tyner tied Brian Oliver and Luis Ulacia for the tourney lead in steals (3), led the event in hits (18) and was third in average behind Paul Gonzalez and Greg Jelks. Tyner was left off the All-Tournament team as Jelks was picked at DH.
