The son of big leaguer Gary Roenicke and the brother of major leaguer Josh Roenicke, pitcher Jason Roenicke made his professional debut in 2008.

Roenicke hit .380 in high school. In junior college, Jason had a 6-1, 4.63 ERA as a freshman and 6-1, 4.80 as a sophomore. The Cincinnati Reds took him in the 22nd round of the 2007 amateur draft but he did not sign. He had 3 saves and a 5.02 ERA as a junior transfer to UCSC with 16 strikeouts in 14 1/3 IP.

He was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 19th round of the 2008 amateur draft. He made his pro debut that summer with the Auburn Doubledays, holding opposing hitters to a .190 average in nine appearances but walking 8 in 11 2/3 IP. He had a 2.31 ERA and one save. He spent 2009 with the Lansing Lugnuts, going 2-5 with a save and a 4.13 ERA in 17 outings out of the bullpen.

In addition to his father and brother, his uncle Ron Roenicke also played major league ball. Another brother, Jarett Roenicke, played in the minors as well.
