Jason Dellaero played in the major leagues in 1999 with the Chicago White Sox. He was at the University of South Florida at the same time as Ross Gload, who later also became a White Sox player.
A first-round pick in 1997, he played in the minors or independent ball from 1997 to 2005, mostly as a shortstop. He showed moderate power, hitting at least 10 home runs three separate seasons in the minors.
Dellaero was legendary for his defensive prowess as a shortstop. If he could have hit better, he might have won the shortstop job with the 1999 White Sox. Instead, the White Sox went with Mike Caruso, who was the same age as Dellaero and who hit .250 that season. In 2000, the White Sox brought in Jose Valentin to play shortstop.
At one point, the White Sox tried to convert Dellaero to a pitcher, perhaps to take advantage of his arm and to minimize the importance of his bat.
