[edit] Biographical Information

Jamie Vermilyea played briefly in the major leagues. He has been used as both a starter and reliever throughout his career in baseball.

A walk-on at college, Vermilyea became a regular hurler. He set the New Mexico Lobos season record for innings in 2002 (131 1/3) and finished 4th in school history with 251 K. In 2002, he led the Mountain West Conference with 107 strikeouts but went 7-9 with a 6.24 ERA. In 2003, the junior improved to 7-4, 4.27, finishing third in the Conference in ERA and again leading in strikeouts (112). He was named to the All-Conference team. The Toronto Blue Jays took him in the 9th round of the 2003 amateur draft.

Vermilyea split his first pro season between the Auburn Doubledays (5-1, 2.37, 53 K in 30 1/3 IP) and the Dunedin Blue Jays (0-2, 2 Sv, 2.49, 25 K in 21 2/3 IP). In 2004, he split time between Dunedin (5-1, 3.09) and the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (3-2, 5 Sv, 2.51). In 2005, he pitched for New Hampshire (3-3, Sv, 2.60) and the Syracuse Sky Chiefs (3-0, 5.60). The Boston Red Sox took him in the Rule V Draft but returned him to Toronto during spring training in 2006. He was with the same two clubs in '06, appearing in five games for New Hampshire (1.65, Sv) and spending the bulk of the year in Syracuse (6-7, Sv, 3.85).

In 2007, Jamie had his 5th straight season at two levels, pitching for Syracuse primarily (2-2, Sv, 4.15) but also making his big league debut. He tossed six scoreless innings for the 2007 Blue Jays, allowing five hits and no walks while striking out two. He only pitched 20 games in 2008, all with New Hampshire, going 3-3 with a 7.55 ERA and 1.96 WHIP.

Gone from the Jays system, Vermilyea signed with Grosseto in Italy for 2009. He had a rough Italian Baseball League debut, on April 11, allowing 3 runs in 3 2/3 relief innings against Telemarket Rimini in a 6-0 loss.
