James Griffy played two seasons of minor league ball before serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Following his time in the army, he returned to baseball in 1955, spending the season in the Detroit Tigers organization. He hit .307 for the 1955 Valdosta Tigers, his only time topping 100 at-bats.
