Jake Hager was a first-round pick in the 2011 amateur draft.

Hager hit .547 as a high school senior, with 57 RBI, 11 home runs, 28 steals and 75 runs; as a pitcher, he had a 3-2, 2.43 record. Gatorade named him the Nevada Baseball Player of the Year. He had a commitment to Arizona State University when the Tampa Bay Rays took him with the 32nd pick of the 2011 amateur draft. He was one of ten first-rounders they took that year, but the other nine were all compensation picks - Taylor Guerrieri and Mikie Mahtook before him and Brandon Martin (a fellow shortstop), Tyler Goeddel, Jeff Ames, Blake Snell, Kes Carter, Grayson Garvin and James Harris after him. Jake signed for a $963,000 bonus.

Hager made his pro debut on July 4 with the Princeton Rays, hitting 8th and playing DH. He went 0 for 3 with a walk and a run against the Bluefield Blue Jays.
