The Jacksonville Braves began play in the South Atlantic League in 1953. In their inaugural year, the team featured a young Hank Aaron, who hit .362 with 125 RBI and won the league's MVP award. The Braves went on to capture the league title in 1956. Hall of Famer Phil Niekro also played for the club in 1960. The team moved into Sam Wolfson Baseball Park in 1955.
