[edit] Biographical Information
Jack Sharrott was a two-way player who was more effective at pitching than hitting in the majors. His ERA+ in four seasons was 115.
Neighbors as a child included Jack Taylor, Tuck Turner, Jack Cronin and George Sharrott. Source: SABR biography of Jack Taylor. Jack Sharrott and George Sharrott were born within three months of each other, so clearly they were not brothers.
Pinch-hitters were used so seldomly that when Jack Sharrott got two pinch-hits in 1893, it set a record. Source: The Official Rules of Baseball Illustrated.
The Sporting Life of May 31, 1902 reported that Sharrott would be out for a while due to "trouble with his eyes".
The Westfield Leader issue of July 29, 1943 says that Sharrott played semi-pro ball in the Central New Jersey Baseball League in the 1890's. John Warner was another major leaguer who played in that league.
In the minors, Jack played four years for Bangor, and managed during two of those years. His minor league career ran from at least 1890 to 1903, and he managed at least five seasons in the minors.
He coached a number of years at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
