[edit] Biographical Information

Jack Leary played for seven teams in three leagues during his five-year major league career. He appeared at every position except catcher. As a hitter, his .287 batting average was tenth in the league in 1882. As a pitcher, he was not very successful except during his half-season with Baltimore in 1882 when he posted an ERA of 1.38 in 26 innings.

He played a lot of games at shortstop and third base, which is unusual for a left-handed thrower.

His minor league career ran from at least 1877-87. In 1885 he was suspended after going on a "spree", but reinstated on condition that he be totally abstinent the rest of the season.

He is not to be confused with John Leary, a later player who was often called Jack.
