[edit] Biographical Information
According to Peter Golenbock in Wrigleyville, Jack Harper beaned Frank Chance, player-manager for the Chicago Cubs, early in the 1906 season. In retaliation, Chance traded for Harper mid-season, forced him to take a pay cut from $4500 a year to $1500, and kept him on the bench the rest of the season (except for one brief appearance). Harper appealed to the league office but lost. Harper became so despondent that he quit baseball that same year.
