Jack Butterfield was the head coach at the University of Maine and the University of South Florida. He was named college coach of the year in 1964 when he took Maine to the College World Series.
Butterfield joined the New York Yankees in 1976 as a scout and moved up to VP in charge of scouting and player development. He died in an auto accident in 1979.
His son Brian Butterfield later coached in the majors.
