[edit] Biographical Information
Jack Harshman was a rarity - a successful pitcher who was also a slugger. He won 69 major league games and was always a threat to hit a homer. In perhaps his best year, 1956, he won 15 games and also hit 6 home runs in 71 at-bats.
A tall, lanky lefty who won 40 games for the White Sox from 1954 to 1956, Harshman was also a powerful hitter. He led the 1947 Western International League with 36 HR and 142 RBI. He also led the 1951 Southern Association with 47 HR. In the majors, he hit 21 HR in only 424 at-bats while compiling a .179 lifetime batting average.
On July 25, 1954, Harshman struck out 16 batters in a game against the Boston Red Sox. This is still the White Sox franchise record for strikeouts in a game.
