 Biographical Information
Jace Peterson was a supplemental first round pick in the 2011 amateur draft.
Peterson was All-State in football, basketball and baseball in high school. In college, he played defensive back for two years at McNeese State University. In 2010, the sophomore hit .353 with 68 runs (most in the Southland Conference) and 35 steals. He was 16th in NCAA Division I in swipes. He was named All-Conference at shortstop. The next season, he fell to .335 with 30 steals and a Conference-leading 67 runs. He finished with a school-record 78 career steals. The San Diego Padres took him with the 58th pick of the 2011 draft. The pick was compensation for the signing of Kevin Correia by the Pittsburgh Pirates. It was the fourth Padres selection, following Joe Ross, Michael Kelly and Brett Austin.
Peterson signed for a $624,600 bonus. Assigned to the Eugene Emeralds, he was hitting .235/.364/.383 after 20 games in the minors. He had 9 steals in 11 tries as well as 7 errors at short.
