J.D.Arteaga was a pitcher on the 1996 College World Series runner-up Miami Hurricanes and was named to the All-Tournament Team. He was selected by the New York Mets in the 26th round of the 1997 amateur draft. Arteaga pitched four seasons with the Mets organization until he was drafted by the Houston Astros in the minor league section of the 2000 Rule V Draft. He was released by the Astros after two seasons at AAA with the New Orleans Zephyrs.
In 2003, J.D. was released by the Texas Rangers in spring training and returned to his alma mater to get a degree in criminal justice and to become an assistant coach. He finished his professional career with a 48-34 record and a 3.40 ERA. He started 80 games and made 92 relief appearances. As of 2010, Arteaga was the Assistant Head Coach/Pitching Coach at UM.
