Shortstop-rightfielder Irv Ray played four seasons in the major leagues. Standing 5 ' 6 " tall, he was nicknamed "Stubby".
Ray was born and died in Maine, and went to the University of Maine, where he attended between 1883-88. He was the first major leaguer to come out of the University, and came to the majors in 1888.
Ray broke in with the 1888 Boston Beaneaters and was with the team for nine games in 1889, but was bought by the 1889 Baltimore Orioles of the [][American Association (19th Century)|American Association]]. He hit .331 between the two teams in 1889.
In 1890 he had his best year, hitting .360 for Baltimore. His batting average would have been second-best in the league, but he didn't qualify for the title because he appeared in only 38 games. The next year, playing in over 100 games, he hit a more ordinary .278.
