Intercontinental Cup

The Intercontinental Cup was a quadrennial (formerly biennial) tournament between the members of the International Baseball Federation (IBAF). It was first held in 1973 in Italy. As with many international competitions it was dominated by Cuba which won 11 of the 17 tournaments, as well as Japan, winner of 12 medals. Unlike the Baseball World Cup, for which teams must qualify, it was an invitation-only event, leading to inclusion of some countries that otherwise might not get a taste of a global tournament (for instance, Hong Kong in 2010).
