Hugo "Dutch" Klaerner, in spite of his European-sounding name, was born in Fredericksburg, TX and was the son of the Gillespie County sheriff. He came to the majors at age 25 to pitch three games for the 1934 White Sox.

Klaerner had some success in the minors. He went 24-7 for Pine Bluff in 1934, and the following year went 20-9 for Longview. He was 15-12 for Oklahoma City in 1936 and won 16 games for Shreveport in 1940.
Hugo also became Gillespie County sheriff, serving from 1950-80. Source: Saint Paul Saints History, which contains a photo of the 1938 St. Paul Saints, champions of the American Association. Klaerner played on the team, going 8-8.
