Hod Eller occasionally served as an umpire in Negro National League games and pitched at least once for the famous Twenty-Fifth Infantry team which produced several Negro League players.

In the last game of the 1919 World Series, Eller pitched a complete game to win the Series for the Reds. On his last pitch, Joe Jackson grounded out to second, for whatever reason.
