[edit] Biographical Information
Herm McFarland played pro ball from around 1890 to 1910, coming to the majors for five seasons. He was a big league regular in 1901 and 1903.
McFarland is one of six players (through 2010) with that last name. Except for Howie McFarland, who was up in 1945, all the others were in the majors between 1884 and 1908. In 1903, when Herm was a regular for the New York Highlanders, Ed McFarland was the regular catcher for the Chicago White Sox and Chappie McFarland was the # 1 pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals.
Although his given first name was Hermas, he was often called Herman in the press.
He was not the greatest of home run hitters, but two of his homers came off very big names. His last homer of the 1901 season came off Cy Young and his first homer of the 1902 season came off Clark Griffith.
