The Boston Red Sox were the last major league team to integrate. When Pumpsie Green was recalled from the minors in 1959, he became the first African-American to play for the Red Sox. Herb Plews was the player sent to the minors to make room for Green.
Plews missed the 1951-1952 seasons due to military service.
