[edit] Biographical Information

Harvey Smith was a medical student at the University of Pennsylvania when he played major league baseball during the summer of 1896 for the 1896 Washington Senators.

The Senators traded their third baseman Bill Joyce in early August 1896, thus leaving an open spot at third base. They acquired Duke Farrell, who played some third but mostly was a catcher. Smith became the regular third baseman for the remainder of the year, showing the same range as Joyce and hitting .275 (the team average was .286).

After his time in major league baseball, Smith returned to medical school, received his M.D. degree in 1897, and went on to a long and very prestigious career as a doctor. He did his last surgery at age 89.
