[edit] Biographical Information

Harry Berte hit .333 in his cup of coffee with the 1903 Cardinals.

Berte played for numerous teams in his minor league career from 1893 to 1914. Among teams where he stayed a while were Richmond (four years with various teams), Cedar Rapids (five years), Dayton (two years), Jacksonville (four years) and Kearney (three years).

"The Case of Harry Berte" made the front page of the March 19, 1898 Sporting Life, when it was decided that a team had the right to keep "reserve" players. Berte had asked for his release on the theory that the Quincy club had been disbanded, but the ruling was that Quincy's club had merely moved to Ottumwa, IA. Berte's "services" were awarded to Ottumwa.
