His father Harl Maggert was banned from baseball in 1920 for accepting money to throw games. The father played almost all of his major league career in one season, in 1912, while the son played his entire major league career in one season, in 1938.
Maggert specialized in pinch-hitting in his season in the majors.
In 1937 he led the Piedmont League with a .342 batting average. Source: A History of Professional Baseball in Asheville. He hit approximately the same for another team in the Piedmont League in 1936. He was also in the PCL for parts of four seasons.
