The Hardware City Rock Cats of the Eastern League began play in 1995 when the New Britain Red Sox became an affiliate of the Minnesota Twins and changed names. The team played in Beehive Field for their first season and went 65-77. They moved into New Britain Stadium in 1996, and their record dropped to 61-81 that year. The following season, the club changed its name again and became the New Britain Rock Cats.
Most notable among the club's alumni are Matt Lawton, Todd Walker, and Coco Crisp.
