Gus Schmelz was a 19th Century manager at both the Major League and Minor League levels. He is one of the few managers who rose to the level of Major League manager without ever having played himself.

In eleven years, he managed 1,357 major league games with 6 different teams. His record was 624-703 (.470).

Between 1884 and 1898, Schmelz managed in the American Association, the National League, the Southern Association and the Western League. He is buried in Green Law Cemetary in Columbus, Ohio.
