 Biographical Information
The Los Angeles Dodgers took Greg Hendrix in the 45th round of the 2006 amateur draft out of high school. He had a 3.48 ERA as a senior at Southern Polytechnic State University. In 2011, he went 0-2 with a 4.66 ERA in his pro debut for the Lake Erie Crushers, with 18 strikeouts in 19.1 IP. He struggled a year later with the London Rippers/Road Warriors, going 0-3 with a 8.80 ERA and 15 walks in 15.1 IP (though he fanned 16).
He then joined the British national team in the 2012 European Championship and excelled in his debut, striking out 8 and allowing only one run (unearned) in a complete-game victory over the Czech Republic. He threw 126 pitches in that contest on September 8, but stepped up after just two days rest to start against the Netherlands on September 11. He started well, but ran into trouble in the fourth inning, ultimately giving up 5 runs while striking out 7 in the game. In the 2013 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, he again played for Britain, but led the team with four walks and his five runs allowed tied Estevenson Encarnacion for the lead. In a 16-1 loss to Germany, he was the second-best hurler for his club, allowing two runs in two innings (both on a Max Kepler hit). He fared less well in a 11-1 loss to Team Canada. Relieving Michael Roth in the 7th, he allowed a single to Adam Loewen and walked Shawn Bowman and Rene Tosoni; Paul Waterman replaced him and allowed all 3 inherited runs to score.
He played for the Windsor Royals in the Queensland League (Australia) in 2013, compiling a 1.40 ERA in 25.2 IP. He struck out 38 while walking 10 and held opposing batters to a .092 BA.
Hendrix played for the Peoria Explorers in the Freedom Pro Baseball League in 2013, putting up a 4.60 ERA. His ERA was 3.07 in games not played at Prescott's Roughrider Park, which has been described by the local media as a "hitter’s dream and a pitcher’s nightmare" due to the elevation (5,400 feet) and short fences (318 and 314 feet on the foul lines).
In a break from the Freedom League, Hendrix played for the British national team in the 2013 European Championship Qualifier. He was named MVP of the Zurich pool, going 2-0, including a complete game shutout victory in the final game versus Ukraine. In 16 innings pitched during the tournament, he racked up 28 Ks against just one BB and yielded only one ER (4 total runs).
Hendrix played for the HSV Stealers in the Baseball-Bundesliga in 2014, pitching 62.2 innings for a 3.30 ERA. He held opposing batters to a .226 average and struck out 78 (11.2 per game), but also walked 53. Due to a thin Stealers bullpen, he averaged 128 pitches in nine starts, including four 140+ pitch outings, one of them at 158 pitches and another at 160.
Hendrix returned to the Hamburg Stealers in the Baseball-Bundesliga for the Summer 2015 season, pitching 76.2 innings for an 3.87 ERA. He issued 81 Ks, but also 54 walks. He was 5-5, including a win against Regensburg Legionäre in the first round of the playoffs for the Stealers' first postseason victory since 2010.
In the 2016 European Championship, Hendrix pitched 7 innings for the British national team, with a 0.00 ERA, 7 Ks, 1 BB, and a .136 opponents' batting average. He picked up the loss against Sweden, however, by allowing runners to score who had been placed on base under the European Championship extra innings rule (runners placed on 1st and 2nd with no outs).
In the 2017 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers (Qualifying Group D: September 22-25, 2016), Hendrix started for Great Britain against Pakistan, allowing only 1 hit in 4 innings while striking out 3, but allowed 2 runs in relief versus Israel. He had a 4.15 ERA for the tournament.
In 42.1 innings pitched for the British national team, Hendrix is 3-2, with a 3.00 ERA, 53 Ks and 12 BBs. He is fourth all-time among British national team pitchers in strikeouts and innings pitched, ranking behind only Brian Thurston, Gavin Marshall and Alex Smith in both categories.
