[edit] Biographical Information
Greg Gross played 17 seasons in the majors, all in the National League. He was a center fielder in the minors, but moved over because Cesar Cedeno was center fielder when he came up. His .314 average as a rookie in 1974 was third in the league (Bake McBride, who hit .309, won the Rookie of the Year award). Gross was thrown out stealing 20 times that season, however. He played on the 1980 World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies. He also pitched in two major league games.
With the Chicago Cubs in 1977 Gross finally hit his first career home run on July 6. It was his 481st major league game.
He is one of the leaders among pinch-hitters with 136 pinch hits.
