In 1910 Greenwood, MS got its first professional baseball team, the Greenwood Chauffeurs. Greenwood had a strong initial campaign, edging the Jackson Tigers for the pennant in the reorganized Cotton States League by finishing with a 71-36 record. Among the team's stars were Ollie Welf (16-7) and a pitcher named Vernuelle (24-9). The next season they became known as the Greenwood Scouts.
