The Greenville Bombers of the South Atlantic League began play in 2005, when the Capital City Bombers relocated to Greenville, South Carolina. That year, the club also became a Boston Red Sox affiliate. The Bombers played their home games at Greenville Municipal Stadium. Led by skipper Chad Epperson, they went 72-66 and tied for sixth in the 16-team SAL. The club led the league in batting average (.275), led by All-Star DH John Otness (.331/.398/.469), OF Jeff Corsaletti (.357/.429/.490 in 59 games) and All-Star 3B Andrew Pinckney (.311/.362/.535, 21 HR). Following the season, the team was renamed the Greenville Drive.
