[edit] Biographical Information

Grady "Butcher Boy" Adkins pitched quite a lot during his two seasons in the majors. With the 1928 White Sox he appeared in 36 games, primarily as a starter, and went 10-16. Two of the team's other starting pitchers were future Hall of Famers, Red Faber and Ted Lyons. With the 1929 White Sox he was in 31 games, half of which he started, and he had a record of 2-11. However, as a hitter his SLG of .391 was higher than the team's SLG of .363.

Adkins pitched at least 11 seasons in the minors, winning 21 with Henryetta in 1920 and 26 the next year with the same team. In 1926 with Shreveport he won 19.

He managed the Vicksburg Hill Billies in 1924.

Baseball Digest of December 1957 has a story about how Adkins asked teammate Moe Berg if the Yankees were a tough team. Berg said to pitch them like any other team, and when the Yanks got a bunch of hits off of Adkins, Adkins told Berg he'd never believe another word Berg said.

Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth hit home runs in the same game off of numerous pitchers. Adkins was one of them, on June 12, 1928.
