Outfielder Gorkys Hernandez was signed by the Detroit Tigers in 2005 and made his pro debut the following summer with the GCL Tigers, for whom he hit .327 with 5 home runs and 27 stolen bases and was named a Florida State League All-Star. In 2007, he was with the West Michigan Whitecaps and was named Midwest League MVP after hitting .293 with 4 homers, 50 RBIs, and 54 steals.
Following the 2007 season, Hernandez was traded to the Atlanta Braves in the deal that brought Edgar Renteria to Detroit. Hernandez was 0 for 4 with 2 strikeouts in the 2008 Futures Game as a RF/LF for the World team. He hit 9th in the order. In the second, he struck out against Trevor Cahill. In the 5th, he hit a liner back to pitcher Will Inman. Hernandez struck out facing Casey Weathers in the 8th. In the 9th against Kevin Pucetas, he hit into a double play, erasing baserunner Che-Hsuan Lin.
