Gookie Dawkins won an Olympic gold medal for the United States in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Dawkins was the starting shortstop for Team USA in the 1999 Pan American Games. He hit .273 for the tournament. In the semifinal game in which the US clinched a spot in the 2000 Olympics, Dawkins was removed in the 10th inning in favor of Mike Neill. Neill's single off of Vicente Palacios scored Marcus Jensen with the run that earned the US a ticket to the Olympics.
