Golden State League
From BR Bullpen
The Golden State League was a four-team independent league that operated for three weeks in 1995. The league had four teams based in the southwest United States. The league had originally planned to begin play in 1993 but faced obstacles in securing municipal financing, ballparks and subsidies for its teams. The new league also was to play in the territory of the affiliated California League. Plagued by financial difficulties, the season opener was postponed several times from the original target date of March 31, 1995. The Chico-based Sierra Nevada Miners franchise was unable to secure a stadium and became a road team. The league held its opening game held on June 16, 1995 in Yuma, but folded on July 4.
