Gilberto Méndez is one of the few pitchers to appear in the first four Baseball World Cups of the 21st Century - yet he threw fewer innings (13 1/3) than many pitchers throw in a single World Cup.

Méndez allowed five runs in four innings in the 2001 Baseball World Cup and had the second-highest ERA on Panama's staff. In the 2002 Intercontinental Cup, the right-hander gave up 5 runs and 3 hits in 2 2/3 IP and again had the second-worst ERA on his team, ahead of only Miguel Gomez. During the 2003 Baseball World Cup, he struck out six and allowed one run in four innings.

Méndez allowed one run in three innings in the 2005 Baseball World Cup. In the 2007 Pan American Games, he allowed one run in two innings. During the 2007 Baseball World Cup, he surrendered 3 walks and 3 runs in 2 1/3 IP. In the 2008 Americas Baseball Cup, he went 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA. He was on Panama's roster for the 2009 World Baseball Classic but did not pitch in the event.
