Gil Coan was a speedy outfielder who played 11 years in the major leagues, mostly with the Washington Senators.
In 1956, he entered the insurance business, and since 1962 the Brevard Insurance Agency has been owned and operated by Coans. Gil retired in 1986, and his son and grandson continue to run the agency. Gil works on his farm, plays golf, and is active in church.
Coan holds the record for most at-bats in a season in which a player hit .500 or better. He collected 21 hits in 42 at-bats for a .500 average. Despite an ordinary .254 career batting average, he hit .303 in both 1950 and 1951.
