Given all the baseball players born in Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and other countries in the Caribbean and Central America, it may be a surprise to learn that Gerald Young is the only major leaguer ever (as of September 1, 2007) born in Honduras.
Young played eight seasons in the majors, stealing 155 bases. He also appeared eleven seasons in the minors from 1982-94, and from 1987 on, whenever he was in the minors, he hit at least .290. After 1994, he played some independent ball.
While Young hit only .246 without much power in the majors, he did draw walks well, posting a .329 on-base percentage for his career in the majors. In the minors from 1982-94, his on-base percentage was .375. In each case, his OBP was higher than his slugging percentage.
Young was probably born in the wrong era for his skill set - the three most similar players, according to the similarity scores method, all played in the 1901-10 era, a time in which walks and stolen bases were relatively much more valuable than when Young played.
