[edit] Biographical Information

George Maloney was an umpire in the Florida State League (1952-1954), Carolina League (1955), Sophomore League (1960-1961), Eastern League (1962-1963), and Pacific Coast League (1964-1969). He was then an American League umpire from 1969 to 1983. While working in the Class D Florida State League, Maloney and his fellow umpire once ejected so many players the game ended in a forfeit. His most controversial ML call came in 1975 when two Yankees, Graig Nettles and Sandy Alomar Sr., ended on third base at the same time. The Cleveland catcher tagged Alomar and Maloney called him out. Then Nettles was tagged as he stepped off the base, but Maloney said he had called time. The argument erupted over whether the ball was still in play or not so that Nettles could ask for time out.
