Biographical Information[edit]

George Hogriever holds the career minor league record for stolen bases with 948. He played only two years in the majors, but in one of them, 1895 with the Cincinnati Reds, he stole 41 bases in 69 games. His other major league season was 1901, when he played in the inaugural major league season of the American League with the Milwaukee Brewers. Before he ever played in the major leagues, though, he umpired three games in the National League in 1893.

"Hoggy" stole 93 bases in the Western League in 1894 and 72 bases in the same league in 1897. In 1906, with the Des Moines Champs at age 37, he stole 66 bases, second in the league. Five years later, as a 42 year old player/manager, he swiped 30 bases in 118 games with Appleton.

Hogriever played 2,618 minor league games from 1889 to 1912 and had a career .291 average.
